Celebrating Cool FM at 16

In 1979, when AIM Consultants Limited, AIM Architects & Engineering Consultants Limited, all subsidiaries of AIM Group – kicked off operations in Lagos, their plans were focused on designing structures and harnessing natural resources in Nigeria. The organization, headed by Amin Ibrahim Moussalli , carried out its stated plan well, so much so it became one of two major integrated consultancy firms established in the new Federal Capital Territory participating in its long-term development in buildings and infrastructural projects.


Aiming to conquer new grounds, the group delved into the broadcasting and communications industry by floated Steam Broadcasting and Communications Limited in the mid 90s. After its creation, Chris Ubosi, who had worked with AIM Group as a Quantity Surveyor, was moved to Steam Broadcasting and communications as the Deputy Managing Director while Amin Mousalli, the Group Managing Director of AIM Group held the position of Managing Director.

Following this, Cool FM 96.9 FM was launched on October 1, 1998 with its office situated on Etim Iyang crescent, Victoria Island, Lagos. The station’s creation brought on talented OAPs including Olisa Adibua , Freeze and Dare Art Alade who have all become household names in the industry today.

Cool FM 96.9 FM became the toast of listeners in Lagos, appealing to young people who wanted a more robust platform with exciting content coupled with entertainment on the go.

The employment of American born OAP, Dan Foster in 2000 did not only shoot up the popularity of the radio station; it quickly made Cool FM the hub for entertainment activities. Despite the exit of Chris Ubosi who quit his position to kick off Megaelectrics Limited, which today owns Beat FM, Classic FM and Naija FM , Cool FM has continued to grow in leaps and bounds. 16 years after its creation and many years after the exit of some of the pioneering OAPs, Cool FM is still standing strong as one of the top rated radio stations in the country as it is not listened to in 5 states in Nigeria while several listen in via the internet.

From Freeze to Amaka, Joyce and Taymi, Dot2un to Hashim, Mannie, Kaylah, Mercy, N6 and Shine, Cool FM has held listeners in Lagos and by proximity, Ogun State; Port Harcourt, Abuja, Kano firm in its grip with programmes include the Good Morning Nigeria Show, Mid-Day Oasis, Road Show, Night Café, Overnight Lounge, Saturday Morning Groove, Saturday Afternoon Groove, Sunday Chillout Zone, Cool Request Show, Praise Jam, This is Accoustic, Cool 20 Chart and more.

In 2007, AIM Group consolidated on the success of Steam Broadcasting and Communications in the Nigerian Broadcasting by kicking off Wazobia 95.1 FM in Lagos in November 2007 for Lagos’ large grassroots audience. The move paid off so much that the company rolled out Cool 95.9 FM and Wazobia 94.1FM in Port Harcourt in November 2008; Cool 96.9 FM in Kano in October 2011; Wazobia 99.5 FM in Abuja in Janurary 2011; Wazobia 95.1 FM in Kano in October 2011.

According to the owners, Cool FM, Wazobia and Nigeria Info FM reach an estimated population of almost 70 million in Nigeria taking into account the population in Lagos, Rivers, FCT, Kano and adjoining States, capturing over 45% of the audience in Lagos and environs, 60% in Rivers and environs, around 40% in Abuja and environs as well as 15% in Kano.

To mark its 16th anniversary, owners of Cool FM launched Cool TV and Wazobia TV amidst pomp recently on cable TV, Startimes , the beat surely goes on for Cool FM.
