It’s very rare and almost impossible to see fans of a club boo their own team any time they net a ball. But that was exactly what happened to Chelsea Football Club yesterday during a match that saw them winning Sunderland, 3 goals to 1.
Fans of the club, feeling that they betrayed their former manager, Jose Mourinho and set him up for his being sacked from the job, booed loudly at the team for the duration of the match and booed louder any time they scored.
The team playing with a new found vigour that has been missing the past months, netted their first goal by Ivanoic, 5 minutes into the game, but instead of being met with cheers and celebrations, Chelsea fans joined Sunderland fans to boo the team loudly.
“You let José down. You let us down,” one the banners waved by a fan said, affirming Mourinho’s words last week when they lost to Leicester City that the team “betrayed” him.
Not long after they scored the third goal, chants of “Mourinho”, “Mourinho” rented the air destabilizing the team who went on defence from then on, creating space for Sunderland to score their first goal.
It’s going to be a very tough job for whoever will be appointed to manage the team next, he has a large and unenviable task of trying win back the love of Chelsea fans.
